Journal 2 - This thought isn't original, but my feelings are

"We know not that a text is not a line of words releasing a single 'theological' meaning, but a multi-dimensional space in which a variety of writing, none of them original, blend and clash" (Barthes, p. 146). When I read this line I immediately thought about how evolved we are as humans and how far we have come with technology and discovery. It's to the point where we don't have original thoughts anymore and only keep saying the same thing over and over just in different words. However, what we do have are original experiences and feelings. In my artwork I am not trying to create a brand new idea, introduce a new concept, or say something that has never been said before. Instead, I am trying to show my feelings and experiences with the world. I'm my video I explain how the exhibition is about identity and how labeling ourselves can cause internal battles. I'm not re-inventing the wheel with the concept for my art work, but I am showing a new perspective on how this concepts makes me feel about who I am and how I visually picture it in my mind. By sharing these emotions with the viewer, I hope it makes them think about their own identities and they start to understand how their labels make them feel. The viewer is free to interpret how I am projecting my feelings, but I want them to leave understanding the anxiety I feel.
Project update: I finished my paint a few weeks ago and I am hoping to finish the last drawing and all touch ups by Monday night. I hope to have my backgrounds sketched out and to start embroidering this week. I wish I was posting more videos but I have been too overwhelmed with actually finishing my art, working towards my teaching certificate, graduation coming up, and so many others things that I might have to be happy with posting one video a week. In all I am content with how my Instagram reel project is going and I can't wait to share the final pieces when they are done!
Very excited to see the final product Shelby! These Instagram shots are baller.
ReplyDeleteI have been peaking into the wriston drawing space here and there to see the progress on the senior exhibitions and it is always so cool to see yours since we have documentation of the actual process of you making them. So pumped to see them finished soon!
ReplyDeleteI love this quote that you are using and how you express that your art isn't about original thoughts, concepts or ideas but about sharing something that speaks to your heart. This approach feels, therefore, much less commercial and capitalistic and more so authentic and personal.
