Journal 3 - The fear of the audience

"The amateur, a role defines much more by a style than by a technical imperfection, is no longer anywhere to be found; the professionals, pure specialists whose training remains entirely esoteric for the public" (Barthes, p. 150). For my project, the private component is me recording and editing these videos. I am the sole creator of this mini project and get to decide what I record and how I present it to my small audience. Unlike professionals (aka big creatures), I do not have a team to help me think, produce, and create these videos. The public component of my project is posting the videos and getting feedback in the form of comments from the audience. So far I have only received positive remarks from the viewers. However, I have noticed I have gained this fear of the audience. I have noticed I am not critical of what I am recording and I'm worried I will bore the audience or not give them what they want. Like how in this video I apologized for not recording me attaching the French pleats to my pallets. This journal had made me realize I am straying away from the original purpose of this project, to post the raw process of my senior show. My goal is not to entertain the audience or gain more attention to my Instagram (although it would be nice for more people to see my art). My goal is to have a collection of clips for my future self to understand how I created when I was a younger artist, and if that means I was too focused to stop and record, then so be it. I am the creator and the audience.
Progress update: My senior project it nearly complete! I am frustrated I have created more videos during this project, but like I said before, I am so sucked into my exhibition I have no time to make more videos. However, I do have some footage I think I can use to create two more process videos and then a final reveal of my work in the gallery.
These videos are looking great!!
ReplyDeleteI think you are moving in a superb direction! I think the more you focus in on your goal with your documentation, the more you'll focus/see yourself, rather than even think to worry about the audience. If it helps at all, no matter what, I am very invested in you and your art!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst, even without having a team to take the videos + edit, I'd say you've done really well when making these. The layover audio isn't overpowering and you enunciate your words clearly, and all of this while still being able to hear the original videos. With the post attached, it follows similarly to influencer-like videos (in a good way), so some of the concerns mentioned doesn't feel like it's taking away from the project, just adding an engaging element to the audience. I do hope that your artwork gets more attention. It's well-deserved :D
ReplyDeleteLove seeing your hard work paying off! making a cameo felt cool too!
