Research Project: Judy Chicago

My thesis for my project is how Judy Chicago uses female anatomy to discuss the human experience. I choose Chicago for my project because I have a deep appreciation for her paving the way for feminist art. Her art connects to my senior exhibition because I use embroider in my work to discuss how fiber arts is often seen as a crafting hobby that women partake in rather than a fine art. I also have a piece that specifically takes about the dismissal of personal success due to my gender as a women, similar to Chicago's The Liberation of Great Ladies. Chicago uses symbolism, text, and sometimes audio to add conceptual layers to her work to make viewers contemplate women's contributions to the world and how they are usually pushed to the side and often erased from history. Her pieces bring awareness to how women are treated and creates a spotlight for women to be remembered and honored.
